One of the things I most enjoyed doing, when I look back at the last 20 years, was when I started running a DVD blog that was a supplement to the work I was doing at Ain't It Cool News. It was simple and breezy and fun, and part of the reason HitFix was attractive to me was because it was supposed to give me a chance to do that sort of coverage in addition to the movie stuff.
Didn't really work out that way, and over the years, I've done less DVD and Blu-ray coverage than I would like. I think the stakes are totally different when you're writing about home video. There's not the same kind of expectation or hype that there is when you're reviewing theatrical releases. By the time you're writing about the home video release, the film is already out there. People already know what they think of it. Your review is less a peek behind the curtain and more part of a conversation.
I like that.
So I'm going to get back to it. Honestly, another reason to do this is as an exercise in discipline for myself as I warm up each day, and also so there is free content here on the site alongside the things that I'm offering for sale. I hate the idea of locking everything behind a paywall, and I won't do that with anything here on the DVD blog.
I don't think I've ever written more than I'm writing these days, and it's a pretty great feeling to finally be able to write about whatever I'm interested in without worrying about having to justify that interest to someone else.
